The record number of students have been enrolled at SibMed
Sergei Zhvachkin, Governor of Tomsk Region, met with first-year students and lecturers of Siberian State Medical University in Tomsk Big Philharmonic Hall. It was the first time when the first medical flagship university in Russia celebrated the beginning of a new academic year (September 1 is a traditional Russian holiday called the Day of Knowledge) in such fashion. Student activists prepared a presentation about the university and a concert program for their peers and teachers.
Head of the region congratulated the medical students on the beginning of their studying in one of the best medical universities in Russia. “September 1 is a special holiday for our region. This year students from 61 Russian regions and 28 countries have been enrolled atSibMed” Sergei Zhvachkin said. In the summer more than 10,000 people applied for admissions atSibMed. This number exceeds the last year’s indicators by a quarter. 1,665 people have been enrolled at SibMed as first-year students, which is an absolute record over the last five years. “SibMed lecture halls are steeped in history. Outstanding doctors and world-class researchers studied and worked here. Today new discoveries are being made in university labs. A close link between traditions and innovations – this is what makes Tomsk and our research and education complex stand out from other cities and institutions” Governor added and wished the first-year students to respect traditions and develop innovations.
In the 2018/2019 academic year 790 first-year students will be studying on state-funded places; 755 students will study on a commercial basis. Currently SibMed is a leader in the number of state-funded student places among medical universities behind the Urals.
“The number of applicants who scored 100 in their unified state exams as well as winners of subject olympiads has increased by one third. Among our first-year-students there is a winner of the European Finswimming Championship as well as representatives of medical dynasties and school leavers from specialized medical classes. Despite the record number of enrolled students, the average score in unified state exams remains very high. This trend evidences that SibMed is in great demand among the best school leavers in Russia” Olga Kobyakova, SibMed Rector, notices.
The most popular majors are General Medicine (3,476 applications) and Pediatrics (2,268 applications). High competition was traditionally registered for Dentistry; the admission score there was 258 (for General Medicine it was 245 and for Clinical Psychology – 207).
Deputy governors Liudmila Ogorodova and Ivan Deev and deputy of the State Duma of the Federal Assembly of the Russian Federation Tatiana Solomatina, who are all SibMed alumni, also took part in the celebration.
